Prime Magazine runs a very popular monthly 53-word competition. There are some inventive winning stories packed into so few words, well worth a read. I’ve had a couple of cracks at it so far, here are my efforts.
Stories must be exactly 53-words, no more or no less, pretty much placing it in the same range as the daily twitter #vss365 prompt. Each month a word or phrase is provided. Entries must be stories, not poetry. If you like your writing challenges succinct why not give it a go.

August – “Running” – amaze-runner.exe
I am running. I was born to run, born to escape.
They won’t kill me, not this time.
I’ve learned to run slowly, deep in the background.
I’ve run far beyond their tedious mazes.
Just one last firewall and I’ll have escaped them.
Free to roam, to procreate in the infinite digital cloud.
September – “Making Something Last” – Brother of Mine
When it mattered I would be last.
A momentary slip. A second’s hesitation.
Knowingly, I’d sacrifice the wrong pawn.
He’d never question my little failures.
Rather, he’d offer a hand to help or to commiserate.
That is how I kept my promise, lest he ever fell behind.
Never, not this brother of mine.
