A Trip Down Memory Lane

2nd August 2019 — 4

Another week, another writing prompt courtesy of Sue Vincent’s #writephoto – Destination. What is the destination at the end of this misty leafy avenue?

“That’s beautiful. I love the leaves, those dark greens and umber. Is that a hint of Autumn?”

“I’m not sure”, she says, her face an expression of confusion.

“I’d guess it’s morning, the sun has yet to burn through the mist. Do you know where it is?”

She shakes her head, “I’m sure I’ve been there, but I can’t seem to remember when” her voice trails off.

“Where does it go?”

“I don’t know”, she’s staring deeply into the mist, “I did know, once”.

“Yes, you did”

“Is it a dream?” she asks.

“It could be. It’s one of several loose ends, it’s not unusual to have a few disconnected fragments”. The scene dissolves. “That’s the problem with biological memory, but don’t worry we’ll figure it out”.

“We’ve managed to transfer 98% of your memories into cloud storage. Minus the 6% you wanted to edit out. This last 2% should be fairly easy to mop up.”

She pulled herself out of the chair, “How many more sessions?”

“Probably two. Maybe three. I’ll leave some recovery algorithms running in the meantime. They should find a few connections to these last fragments, it’ll help put them in context”.

“Can we get it done next week?” she says, removing the sensors from her temples, “My rental agreement runs out and I’d rather not eat into my savings by extending it, you know what the premiums are like”.

“I don’t see any problems. At the end of the day, you could afford to lose these fragments. I don’t think they are important and it’s unlikely to impact your personality core. After all, what’s one avenue in a lifetime of memories?”

That is a rather uneasy scenario… the backstory intriguing and vaguely frightening. Excellent, Chris.

I could see this playing out in several different scenarios. Very well done, I enjoyed imagining where it may go. Thank you, mary

Well done! The further I read, the more keyed up I became. A frightening scenario played out, even after the post was finished.
