#vss365 – October 2019 – #10

12th October 2019 — 2

Week 10 participating in the very popular #vss365 challenge on Twitter. The aim. To write a daily Very Short Story in less than 280 characters, a single tweet. Yes, that’s characters! Not words.

The prompts themselves are seemingly random single words, the whim of this month’s challenge setter. This months fun has been organised by @AuthorBertEdens. I’ve taken some liberties with formatting simply because WordPress is not Twitter and to make it easier to read.

The cover photo this week was taken just along from Reculver on a beautiful October coastal walk with the pup.

Sunday 6th October – Demon

Viciously, he’d cut up each opponent, slicing his way through the motley pack without mercy.
He’d chase them into the corners, right to that ragged edge and with a banshee’s screech, leave them for dust.
He was a speed #demon – calculating, ruthless, eternally hungry.

Monday 7th October – Music

“Do you hear it,” said the old composer, suddenly alert.
“Hear what?” said the student.
“The music. The beautiful #music”
The student tilted his head, unable to hear a thing. The old fool is losing it, he thought.
“There,” he said, holding a finger up.
Pppffffffftttttttt!

Tuesday 8th October – Perfume

She could smell the pungent #perfume on him.
He reeked of her as he lied his way through another story.
Did he think she was stupid, that she wouldn’t find out?
The tell-tale hair on his jacket, fresh dirt on his boots.
“How dare you walk another dog,” she growled at him.

Wednesday 9th October – Bones

“I have a bone to pick with you,” he said, sitting down on the bed. “You have to eat.”
A bag of #bones, she recoiled in horror. “I can’t.”
“Look, just try a little bit,” he said, picking at the bloody femur.
“I hate you,” she growled. “I never wanted to be a werewolf.”

Thursday 10th October – Lovers

They were star-crossed #lovers.
Her father owned the antique bookshop across the street from the comic store.
He wasn’t a fan of me or my books “that needed pictures” or the Harley I cruised around on.
She’d been longing for something in leather that wasn’t a dusty book.

Friday 11th October – Skin

She had a way of getting under your #skin.
A cappuccino with a smile, a wink and a lingering touch.
A phone number, a date, another coffee later.
A night he’d never forget, but couldn’t quite remember.
It vexed him as he swung upside down above the bed, his skin flayed.

Saturday 12th October – Monster

“Where is she, you #monster ?!”
He shrugged noisily chewing his gum.
“Tell me,” she said, angrily. “You’re only making it worse, for yourself.”
He gave an evil laugh.
“Screw you!” she said.
The door opened. “What’s going on in here?”
“Mum, he’s put gum in my hair again!”

Thanks, Peter. 280 characters is definitely a challenge, more Sudoku than prose.
